Meredith had Cristina. Hannah had Marnie. And Issa, the lead character on HBO’s Insecure, has Molly, played by Yvonne Orji. While both Issa (played by Insecurecreator Issa Rae) and Molly have had a bevy of male love interests—and while many a scene has been stolen by their friends, Kelli (Natasha Rothwell) and Tiffany (Amanda Seales)—the show is, at its core, about the pair’s ride-or-die dynamic, as reflected in the choice this season to feature Molly in the series’s key art, next to Issa, for the first time.
As the third season of the series winds down (the finale airs September 30), lawyer Molly is struggling—though she’s doing a very good job of hiding it, even (largely) from Issa. She recently ended things with Dro (Sarunas J. Jackson), a childhood friend in an open marriage. And this season has also dramatized Molly’s choice to transfer to an all-black law firm, in hopes she might be more comfortable there—only to find herself facing a new and different set of obstacles.
